Part‑Time Video Editor (Contract Role)

About Cognitive Films

Cognitive Films is an Austin‑based production studio that crafts authentic, documentary‑style video stories for businesses and nonprofits. Our lean team owns every stage of production from discovery through delivery, valuing clear communication, professional integrity, and creative excellence.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a flexible, communicative Video Editor to join us 2–3 days per week for roughly three months (with the possibility of ongoing work). This role is great for those eager to sharpen real‑world documentary chops alongside a senior editor two days a week in our South Congress studio, plus optional remote hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Primary: Shape engaging documentary pieces for companies and non-profits, building strong narratives from raw interviews and B‑roll. Many immediate projects are B2B and testimonial/case-study narratives.
  • Editing, sound mixing, color correction, and integrating motion‑graphics templates, titles and lower thirds, etc. Editing multi-rounds of revisions based on feedback from producer and client.
  • Secondary: Edit promos, explainers, and product videos for SaaS / digital brands (VO, screencasts, minimalist motion graphics).
  • Secondary: Create audiograms and short‑form video podcasts in Descript using our templates. Cut remote‑interview soundbites and polish audio/visual quality.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro; comfort editing interviews and unscripted stories.
  • Foundational audio‑mixing and color‑correction abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability in crafting cohesive narratives from raw footage.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Project and asset organization abilities with attention to detail.

Bonus Skills & Experience

  • Motion graphics manipulation experience with templates or custom Mographs/After Effects projects.
  • Descript text-based editing & captions (we’ll train).
  • Openness to generative‑AI tools (video / audio / text / image).

Tools & Tech we use

  • Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop)
  • Descript for podcasts/audiograms
  • Mac‑based workflow

Work Location & Requirements

  • In‑person at our South Congress studio 2 days per week; remaining hours may be remote.
  • Bring your own Mac‑based workstation (preferred) for on‑site work. We provide SSD storage, team templates, and an external monitor/keyboard.
  • We work out of an office located in a shared studio space where Austin photographers and videographers and teams often rent and conduct photo/video shoots.

Compensation

  • Hourly $22 – $30 DOE with a 5‑hour daily minimum.
  • Typical load: two on‑site days + 5‑8 flexible remote hours weekly.
  • Option to convert to a monthly retainer after 30 days (~64 hrs / mo).
  • 1099 contract; paid bi‑weekly upon approved timesheets/invoice.
